Choosing a doctor to care for your baby can be a daunting task! Your pediatrician or family doctor will be part of your family for the next 18+ years! You can choose either a pediatrician (a doctor who specializes in care from birth to late teen years) or a family medicine doctor (a doctor who cares for patients of all ages). We love having new babies in our practice and watching them grow. One of our greatest joys is partnering with new families on the care of their baby.
Here are a few thoughts on how to choose your baby’s doctor:

Choose a practice near your home. You will be seeing the doctor many times in the first few years.

Learn about the practice – hours they are open, if they are open on weekends, after-hours care, support services like lactation, lab, x-ray.

Ask friends/neighbors who they recommend.

Ask your obstetrician who they recommend.

Learn about the doctors – our PAMF website has information on the doctor’s training, schedule, and practice philosophy

Attend a Meet & Greet for new patients (can be a virtual class or some practices meet in person)
Our Newborn Navigation Program can help you choose a doctor before your baby arrives. You can reserve your pediatrician or family medicine physician for your baby – even if their practice is closed when your baby arrives.

About PAMF Pediatrics
We care for children from birth to 18 years of age in our many sites across the Bay Area (link to clinic map). We have a team of pediatricians, family physicians, pediatric subspecialists, lactation specialists, advice nurses, and allied health care professionals ready to provide everything your newborn needs. Our pediatricians are experts in newborn care and see newborns in many of our local hospital nurseries. To reserve your choice for your baby’s doctor, please call our Newborn Navigator desk early in your pregnancy. (contact info for the NND). Our Newborn Navigation team knows which physicians have open practices and can guide you to the perfect choice for your family. Even if the doctor’s practice has closed by the time your deliver, your choice will be honored.
